Halloween Treats

Halloween is an exciting holiday celebrated in the United States on October 31st. It is a spooky day with a lot of fun activities, like dressing up in silly costumes and carving jack-o-lanterns. My favorite part of Halloween, though, is the candy! Children dress up and go trick-or-treating; this is when they knock on their neighbors' doors and receive candy! There are many different types of candy that get passed out to friendly trick-or-treaters and everyone has their favorites. My favorite candy is sour, chewy, sweet, warheads. There are also crunchy snickers, sweet gummy worms, and creamy peanut butter cups. Candies are all different and we can use adjectives to describe them. Do you notice all of the adjectives I used?

Halloween: a celebration on October 31st when children dress up in costumes and receive candy

Costume: an outfit worn to look like someone, or something, else
Jack-o-lantern: a hollowed out pumpkin with a face cut into it

Write a short paragraph describing how you celebrate Halloween. If you do not celebrate the holiday, ask a friend to describe how they celebrate it. Include all 6 vocabulary words in your paragraph.

Grammar Point: Adjectives
Adjectives are words used to describe nouns. Adjectives describe how a person, place, or thing, looks, feels, smells, acts, or sounds like. Adjectives help to make our writing more interesting by allowing the reader to create a picture in their mind.
Grammar Assignment: Underline all of the adjectives I used in my blog post on Halloween Treats. Then, describe your favorite candies using at least three adjectives each.

Healthy Snacks

Everyone loves to eat snacks , but usually we reach for potato chips, cookies, or candy. These foods are delicious, but they are not healthy . Obesity has become a problem in the United States, but we can help by making healthy choices when we eat. Today, I am going to describe three healthy snacks I like to make and eat. These foods are good and good for you! Everyone knows fruits and vegetables are good for you, but they can be a little boring. The first healthy snack I want to tell you about is called "ants on a log". I know what you are thinking... "ew! who wants to eat ants?" Thanksgiving Feast

As November begins and the leaves start to turn yellow, green, and red, I start to think about Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because of all the food! Thanksgiving began hundreds of years ago as a way for the Pilgrims to say thanks to the Native Americans for helping them survive the cold winter. Now, Americans practice many Thanksgiving traditions on the third Thursday in November. The most well-known tradition is a feast shared with friends and family. The staples of this feast include turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, corn, and cranberry sauce. In my house, each family member is asked to make one dish, and I always make the mashed potatoes. I cook potatoes, then add milk, butter, cream, salt, and pepper. After everyone eats a big dinner, it is time for dessert ! Usually, the desserts include pumpkin pie, apple pie, and sweet potato pie.
